Spring gardening time has arrived! If you have nitrogen-loving plants like azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendron, blueberries, asparagus, radishes and carrots, adding used coffee to your soil will give them the fertilizer they need to flourish. Note USED, not fresh, grounds as the pH level of fresh can be harmful to many plants and should not be used alone but in a healthy mix of compost.
You can buy compost using our coffee at Weavers Way Co-ops (“Henry Got Compost”) or make your own. Good quality, homemade compost is made by mixing 2/3 carbon-rich ingredients (such as dried leaves, eggshells, cardboard, straw, shredded unbleached paper coffee filters) with 1/3 nitrogen-rich used coffee grounds. Mix weekly to reduce rot and your compost should be ready in just over a month. Worms also love used coffee grounds and can be used as worm food in vermicomposting. Happy planting!
