Coffee of the Month – Sumatra

June 21, 2018 | 0 Comments

This “Gayo Mountain” coffee is relatively rare, grows on the volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser, in the Aceh region of Sumatra, at 2,500-5,000 feet above sea level by the farm cooperative Koperasi Permata Gayo. The placement of Indonesia at the equator creates the situation of microclimates ideal for great coffee. This year, they are experiencing climate change in a big way, which is expected to greatly affect the amount of coffee they are able to export. In recent years, Sumatra has gained a reputation among Fair Trade buyers as being a bit of a minefield, with multiple cooperatives being certified

FitC, Friends in the City, came to visit us last week for a tour of the Roastery. We may not have inner city chic accommodations but that’s part of our charm, not to mention how we can offer our customers delicious, organic and fair trade coffee at reasonable specialty coffee prices. Joe hosted discussion about the coffee industry, organic fair & direct trade practices, sustainability, roasting and, of course, tasting coffee. Everyone left with more knowledge than expected and a bag of freshly roasted coffee. If you are interested in setting up a tour at PFTR, contact cat@phillyfairtrade.com for more

Love Your Park Day

May 22, 2018 | 0 Comments

We donated coffee to Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Love Your Park Day on 5/12 at Fisher Park in the Olney neighborhood. What a beautiful day and a beautiful park! So many hands were out helping clean up, plant trees, set up the garden, play and have fun. In the picture, PFTR’s Cat Collins got her kids excited to help FPC’s Esmeralda with the garden dirt digging. If you haven’t been to Fisher Park, it has a basketball court, tennis court, community garden, some trails in the trees, a well kept kid playground and a deep valley to do some log rolls

Coffee compost for your nitrogen-loving plants

April 18, 2018 | 0 Comments

Spring gardening time has arrived! If you have nitrogen-loving plants like azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendron, blueberries, asparagus, radishes and carrots, adding used coffee to your soil will give them the fertilizer they need to flourish. Note USED, not fresh, grounds as the pH level of fresh can be harmful to many plants and should not be used alone but in a healthy mix of compost. You can buy compost using our coffee at Weavers Way Co-ops (“Henry Got Compost”) or make your own. Good quality, homemade compost is made by mixing 2/3 carbon-rich ingredients (such as dried leaves, eggshells, cardboard, straw, shredded

Common Grounds in Oaklyn, NJ is a cafe you definitely want to seek out if you haven’t already. They have great coffee (ahem…) and their food is delicious and comforting, especially their muffins! The staff is always friendly and the music makes you feel pretty good too. Their quote wall is the best; one worth the mention is “A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes a big difference”-Winnie the Pooh. They are in the process of rebuilding an antique truck for mobile coffee and treats available for any event. Be sure to check it out at Oaklyn’s Final

For a number of years now, Philly Fair Trade Roasters has taken our food waste (coffee grounds, filters, chaff, banana peels) to Saul Agricultural High School on Henry Avenue. They turn our waste and others into high-quality compost and use it in their crops and in the bedding for their animals to deter pests. We recently found out that they are using our compost in this year’s Flower Show! They also sell the compost at various outlets — as Henry Got Compost!
