🌱 The Story Behind the Bean

This coffee hails from the northern Mandheling region of Sumatra, the second largest island in Indonesia. Known as “Gayo Mountain” coffee, it grows on the volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser in the Aceh region at elevations between 2,500–5,000 feet above sea level. It is produced by the cooperative Koperasi Permata Gayo, which has 2,053 members across 39 villages.

Beyond coffee quality, Permata Gayo also invests in cultural preservation, using Fairtrade social premiums to fund a school where children learn traditional Gayonese song and dance. The cooperative’s growth and dedication to farmers has allowed them to share more of the final coffee price with members. However, climate change is increasingly impacting yields and exports, making support for these farmers more important than ever.
