Bird Friendly Coffee: Small Choice, Big Impact

Bird Friendly Coffee: Small Choice, Big Impact

What Is Bird Friendly Coffee?

On this cool Spring morning, I sat on my deck reading, the sun coming up over the mountain across the field, birds signing around me, sipping my coffee (this morning it was our Colombia coffee), enjoying the experience of it all.  This peace was interrupted only by the sounds of my dog’s early morning energy ruckus on the patio below.  Rather than think on what they were damaging, I choose to focus on the pairing of warm, comforting coffee on this Spring morning in the mid 30’s and the birds signing around me.  What a fantastic pairing to start my day.  Turns out coffee and birds pair together quite nicely in another area of life too.

Bird friendly coffee is coffee grown in a way that protects bird habitats—especially migratory birds. (Smithsonian link)

That usually means:

  • Coffee grown under shade trees
  • Farms that preserve natural forest environments
  • Biodiversity (plants, insects, animals) is protected

Coffee naturally grows under trees, in shade, however many farms have opted for clearing land to create large, sun exposed coffee farms in pursuit of higher yields and more coffee crop.

So, instead of clearing land for large, sun-exposed coffee farms, think of bird friendly coffee farms as working with nature, not against it.

👉 Sun-grown coffee = open fields, fewer trees, less wildlife
👉 Bird friendly coffee = forest-like farms, more life, more balance

So how does this change your coffee?

Why Birds Matter More Than You Think 🐦

Birds play a huge role in coffee-growing ecosystems.

They help:

  • Control pests naturally (fewer chemicals needed)
  • Spread seeds and support plant diversity
  • Support healthy soil and plant growth

When birds disappear, farms often rely more on pesticides and fertilizers.

So, protecting birds = healthier farms = better for you coffee.

It’s all connected.

What is Smithsonian Bird Friendly Coffee?

The Smithsonian Institute developed Bird Certification for coffee in the late '90s as a way to protect habitat and promote conservation for migratory birds.  This promotes tree height and habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Right now, we have two coffees which meet their requirements for bird friendly, both our Guatemala Huehuetenango and La Amistad can be found on the Smithsonian Site as approved Bird Friendly coffees.

How Coffee Farming Impacts Bird Populations

As mentioned earlier, over the years, some coffee farming has shifted toward sun-grown production.

Why?

  • Faster growth
  • Higher short-term yields
  • Easier large-scale farming

But there’s a trade-off.

Sun-grown coffee often means:

  • Trees are cut down
  • Bird habitats are destroyed
  • Biodiversity drops
  • Soil quality declines over time

On the other hand, bird friendly coffee farming helps keep the ecosystem intact.

It’s slower. It’s more intentional.
And it’s better for the long run.

What Makes Coffee “Bird Friendly”?

Not all coffee labeled “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” meets true bird friendly standards.

Not all shade grown coffee is considered ‘bird friendly,’ but all bird friendly coffee is shade grown.  Nuanced perhaps, but here’s some explanations to help -

🌳 Shade-Grown

Coffee plants grow under a canopy of trees—just like they would in nature.

This creates:

  • Shelter for birds
  • Protection for the coffee plants
  • Better soil and moisture balance

🌱 Organic

No synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

That means:

  • Safer environments for birds
  • Healthier soil
  • Cleaner water systems

🌎 Biodiverse

Bird friendly farms support a wide range of life, not just coffee plants.

You’ll often find:

  • Native trees
  • Pollinators like bees
  • Multiple plant species

This creates a thriving ecosystem—not a monocrop like often found in coffee farms where the land is cleared to promote greater sun exposure in pursuit of faster growing coffee plants at the expense of removing other habitat around it.

Is Bird Friendly Coffee the Same as Organic or Fairtrade?

No, they are not.  Each impacts different parts of the coffee production process.

Organic Coffee

Focuses on how the coffee is grown:

  • No synthetic chemicals
  • Soil health and sustainability

Fairtrade Coffee

Focuses on the people behind the coffee:

  • Fair wages for farmers
  • Better working conditions
  • Community support

Bird Friendly Coffee

Focuses on ecosystems and wildlife:

  • Protecting habitats
  • Encouraging biodiversity

Why This Matters

At Philly Fair Trade Roasters, we focus on:

✔️ Organic
✔️ Fairtrade
✔️ Small-batch roasting
✔️ Sustainability

Because when you combine these values, you get coffee that:

  • Tastes better
  • Supports farmers
  • Protects the environment

And yes—aligns closely with what bird friendly coffee stands for.

Does Bird Friendly Coffee Taste Different?

Short answer: it can—

Shade-grown coffee tends to:

  • Develop more slowly
  • Build more complex flavors
  • Produce smoother, richer cups

You’ll often notice:

  • Balanced acidity
  • Natural sweetness

That’s because the coffee plant isn’t stressed—it grows at a natural pace.

And when coffee grows better… it tastes better.

The Connection Between Shade-Grown Coffee and Flavor

Let’s keep it simple.

Coffee grown in the shade:

  • Ripens slower
  • Absorbs more nutrients
  • Develops deeper flavor compounds

Coffee grown in full sun:

  • Grows faster
  • Can be more bitter or flat
  • Often relies more on fertilizers

So when you choose coffee that supports bird habitats, you’re also choosing better flavor development.

That’s a win-win.

Why Bird Friendly Coffee Supports Farmers

This part matters just as much.

Bird friendly coffee farms are often:

  • Smaller
  • More hands-on
  • Focused on long-term sustainability

That means farmers:

  • Take more care with their crops
  • Use better growing practices
  • Invest in their land and communities

When paired with Fairtrade certification, it ensures:

  • Better pay
  • More stability
  • Stronger communities

Your cup becomes part of something bigger.

Sustainability You Can Feel Good About

Let’s zoom out for a second.

When you choose coffee that aligns with bird friendly practices, you’re supporting:

  • Forest preservation
  • Wildlife protection
  • Sustainable farming systems

At Philly Fair Trade Roasters, we carry that same mindset into everything we do:

  • Organic sourcing
  • Fairtrade partnerships
  • Small-batch roasting
  • Recyclable packaging

Because coffee should taste good—and do good too.

How to Choose Better for You Coffee

If you’re looking to make better choices, here’s what to look for -

✔️ Certifications or Indicators

  • USDA Organic
  • Fairtrade Certified
  • Shade-grown (important keyword)

✔️ Transparency

  • Origin information
  • Farmer or cooperative details - our coffees are traceable back to their farm or wash station of origin.
  • Clear sourcing practices

✔️ Fresh Roasting

Even the best beans need proper roasting (our roast date and best by information can all be found on bottom of our bags).

Look for:

  • Small-batch roasting
  • Fresh-to-order shipping
  • We offer both of the above.  Small batch roasted and shipped fresh for you to enjoy.  Our coffee does not just sit around the shop waiting for a home.

A Simple Upgrade to Your Daily Routine

Here’s the best part:

You don’t need to change your whole lifestyle.

Just start with your coffee.

That one daily habit can:

  • Support better farming
  • Protect bird habitats
  • Improve your coffee experience

All without adding complexity to your day.

That’s what we’re about.

Simple, real, better coffee.  Without any artificial additives or flavoring.  Just real good coffee.
