Organic Light Roast Coffee: The Cleanest, Brightest Way to Enjoy Coffee

There was a time when I thought (confused?) light roast coffee with ‘weak coffee.’  This of course is not the case as lighter roast coffees often bless our cups with complex flavors and tasting notes that pay homage to its origins, showcasing all that its region has to offer.  Note – ‘weak coffee’ is about the brewing, not the roast level.

Today well briefly dive into what a light roast coffee is, as well as some of our favorites and current offerings.  If you’re searching for a coffee that’s clean, vibrant, flavorful, and ethically sourced, organic light roast coffee might be exactly what you’ve been missing.

Whether you’re a seasoned coffee lover or new to specialty coffee, you’re about to discover why light roast isn’t “weak”—it’s wonderful.

Please try to appreciate a sense of humor with the picture below; does sunrise and coffee make it a light roast?  Get it?  Sorry...

What Is Organic Light Roast Coffee?

Organic light roast coffee refers to coffee beans that are:

  • Grown without synthetic chemicals like pesticides or fertilizers
  • Certified organic by an accredited body (such as USDA Organic)
  • Roasted lightly to preserve natural flavors, antioxidants, and origin characteristics

Light roasting means beans are roasted for less time and at slightly lower temperatures than medium or dark roasts. The goal is to showcase what the coffee naturally tastes like based on where and how it was grown.

Light roasts typically offer:

  • Floral or citrus notes
  • Natural sweetness
  • Clean finish
  • Unique complexity based on region

When these beans are also organic, you’re getting coffee that’s cleaner for your body and the planet.  PS – did we mention they taste great too?

Why “Organic” Matters in Coffee

Coffee is one of the most chemically treated crops in the world. Non-organic coffee farms often use:

  • Herbicides
  • Synthetic fertilizers
  • Fungicides
  • Insecticides

Over time, traces of these chemicals can remain in coffee beans, soil, and water systems.

Organic coffee farming avoids all of this by using:

  • Natural composting
  • Shade-grown methods
  • Crop rotation
  • Healthy soil practices
  • Natural pest control

Ethiopia Guji

Fun fact – Ethiopia is often considered the birthplace of coffee.  Legend has it a goat herder noticed his goats became more energetic after eating red berries off a plant; thus, coffee was born!

While we don’t have any goats with our Ethiopia coffee, we do have great tasting notes of Cherry, Milk Chocolate, Stone Fruit (a stone fruit is similar to a peach, apricot, nectarine).  This Ethiopia coffee comes from the Guji region, specifically the Layo Teraga Cooperative in which many of its shareholders cultivate coffee in semi-forested gardens around their homes.  Much of this coffee is grown at a little over 2,300 meters above sea level.  This higher elevation contributes to the bright fruit and sweetness this coffee is known for.

PS – its not just our opinion.  The judges at the 2025 US & Canada Global Coffee Competition agreed, naming it a finalist in its category.

Rwanda

Located between Burundi and Uganda, Rwanda is nicknamed ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’ with an average elevation of between 1,000 and 4,500 meters above sea level.  With tasting notes of vanilla, caramel and cooked citrus, these beans have quite the travel to get to your mug.  The Kirorero washing station (COOPAC cooperative) is remote, accessible only by boat after a long drive around the lake.  With multiple wash stations along Lake Kivu’s northern slops, the effort and care come through in each cup of this light roast coffee.

Fun fact – the COOPAC cooperative supports its local community by investing in schools, roads, and clinics as well as providing shade trees to help reduce erosion.
