🌱 The Story Behind the Bean

This coffee comes from Hacienda la Amistad, located in Coto Brus, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and owned by Roberto Montero, a third-generation coffee farmer. His grandfather first came to the area in the early 1900s while surveying the border between Costa Rica and Panama. He later purchased over 10,000 hectares of land and began cultivating coffee.

Today, Roberto’s family has returned more than 6,000 hectares to the government for the preservation of La Amistad International Park, the largest natural reserve in Central America. Only 300 hectares of the 4,000-hectare estate are used for coffee cultivation, while the rest remains preserved forest teeming with wildlife.

Roberto’s commitment to organic farming is paired with his dedication to his community. During harvest, he provides housing and free medical care to seasonal pickers, most of whom are indigenous families from Panama. He also supports his neighbors by offering over 100 full-time jobs year-round, not only in coffee cultivation but also in a dried fruit operation at La Amistad. Each year, he hosts an employee celebration and distributes school supplies to children before the school year begins.
